In order to allay any concerns that buyers might have about purchasing a home, sellers can conduct a number of inspections that testify to the house’s quality and safety. Chief among these, of course, is the home inspection undertaken by a qualified professional. Another very valuable test is a comprehensive radon test that quantifies how much, if any, of the naturally occurring cancer-causing radioactive gas is present. Because it is colorless and odorless, radon cannot be detected without electronic monitors placed strategically around the house. When, and if, levels of radon are detected that are deemed by government standards to be too high, the threat can be circumvented with relatively inexpensive remediation. The reassurance that radon testing brings is invaluable.

HINT: Natural products, including stone (especially granite), sand, minerals, and even concrete contain trace amounts of radioactive elements that may produce radon, which collects in enclosed spaces (until proper ventilation rids the danger of exposure).
