As homeowners have witnessed dramatic changes in housing prices in recent years, it seems they have altered their expectations accordingly. Where many once harbored dreams of living beyond their means in suburban castles with vast expanses of living space, the wish for more modest homes has now largely taken hold. The fact is that the average size of new homes has shrunk about five percent between 2007 and 2010. During that period, the number of homes with square footage of 4,000 feet or more has declined from 120,000 to 35,000. Today’s dream home has 2,200 square feet of living area, four bedrooms, and two-and-a-half baths. Not only are these smaller, high-quality homes easier to maintain, they are easier to afford.

If you want a larger home, or you are ready to downsize, CENTURY 21 SEXTON & DONOHUE is here to make it happen. HINT: According to the National Association of Homebuilders, the average size of a U.S. home in 1970 was 1,400 square feet.
